Pfizer Inc. said on Tuesday it plans to market its erectile dysfunction medicine Viagra, the world’s second-biggest pharmaceutical company, for as little as $1 a pill.
“It is very important to our patients and their families that we get them the medicines they need,” Pfizer Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ian Read told reporters in a conference call at a company-sponsored conference in San Francisco.
Viagra is a generic version of Pfizer’s impotence pill, sold by CVS Health, which had been on patent for years.
Viagra is produced by Eli Lilly and its generic equivalent, Cialis, which was launched in 2003. Pfizer said that in 2012 it plans to sell the drug in the United States for about $1 a pill.
Erectile dysfunction affects about one in every 1,000 men worldwide, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We know that people with erectile dysfunction are at an increased risk of heart disease and stroke,” Read said. “This is important because the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke increases with age.”
The drug was developed by Pfizer, which was founded by Viagra’s original owner, the drug’s maker, and then helped found Eli Lilly in 1998. The company was a longtime business with a history of fighting health care costs.
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998, and sold for about $1 per pill.
Viagra is the company’s fifth-biggest drug and is the biggest in the country. Pfizer said the drug was approved for use in people with erectile dysfunction, but that the number of prescriptions was not 100 percent accurate.
Pfizer is considering the drug in patients with low blood pressure and high cholesterol. Cialis will start selling the drug in the U. S. in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to an announcement in October.

In 2003, Pfizer acquired and licensed the drug company from Eli Lilly for about $1 billion, which would have been worth about $1 billion had Cialis been launched.
“We are very proud to be the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, and we are very happy with the way the company continues to develop, manufacture and market Viagra,” Read said in a conference call with reporters.
Viagra is also the world’s second-biggest drug, behind Sanofi’s Levitra, which is available as a generic in the U. and is available in more than 90 countries, according to a September report by the National Library of Medicine.
Pfizer’s Viagra, produced by Cialis, will be sold in the U. and Europe for about $1 a pill.
“Our vision of making Viagra accessible to everyone is an important one,” Read said.
Viagra will be launched in the U. in the fourth quarter of 2012.
